Public debt of Kazakhstan increases by 20% over the year, exceeds 14 trillion tenge

In March 2018, the cumulative state debt of Kazakhstan amounted to 14.8 trillion tenge, which is 20.9% more than a year earlier, when it was 12.3 trillion tenge.

The total debt of the country consists of state debt of 14.3 trillion tenge, which increased by 20.1% on-year, state-guaranteed debt of 428.5 billion tenge, with a 59.4% increase, and third-party debt under state guarantees of 37.8 billion tenge.

At the same time, the main factor of government debt growth was the internal debt of the government of Kazakhstan, specific weight comprising 39.5%. It increased by 30.9% over the year from 4.4 to 5.7 trillion tenge, while the external debt remained almost unchanged with an increase of only 0.1% or 5 billion tenge.

Over the past 5 years, the national debt has grown 3.7 times for 10.8 trillion tenge, from 4 to 14.8 trillion tenge.

In the first quarter of 2018, 156.7 billion tenge was allocated from the state budget to service debt. This is 21% more than the 129.5 billion tenge debt service for the same period last year.

At the same time, total expenditures of the state budget in all sections amounted to 2.4 trillion tenge and increased by 13.5% on-year. The share of expenses for debt servicing in the budget amounted to 6.5%.

Over the past 5 years, the cost of servicing the public debt has grown by 3.5 times or 328.4 billion tenge, from 130.5 to 458.9 billion tenge.
