In Kazakhstan, the population as of June 1, 2018 is 18 million 253.3 thousand people, and compared to June 1, 2017, increased by 239.1 thousand people, or 1.3 percent, according to the Statistics Committee of the National Economy Ministry.
On the reporting date, the urban population was 10 million 514,300 people, or 57.6 percent of the total, while the rural population accounted for 7 million 739 thousand people, or 42.4 percent.
According to the civil registration bodies, the number of births in January-May this year is 159.9 thousand people, which is 2.9 percent more on-year. The total birth rate per 1000 people is 21.15.
The natural population growth in the country for the reporting period increased by 3.8 thousand people, or 3.8 percent, and amounted to 103.5 thousand people. The natural increase per 1000 population is 13.69 people.
In the period under review, the number of deaths is 56.4 thousand, which is 1.4 percent more than in January-May 2017. The overall death rate was 7.46 deaths per 1000 people.
In January-May 2018 1,366 babies died under the age of 1 year, which is 1.6 percent more than in the previous year. In five months of this year, the infant mortality rate was 8.54 cases per 1000 births.
The main cause of infant mortality is perinatal conditions, from which 637 babies died in January-May, or 46.6 percent of the total number of deaths among infants. The number of infants who died from congenital anomalies was 283, or 20.7 percent, from respiratory diseases - 113, or 8.3 percent, from infectious and parasitic diseases 70 infants, or 5.1 percent, and from accidents, poisonings and injuries - 63, or 4.6 percent.
According to the migration service, the number of registered migrants who arrived in the country in January-May 2018 against the same 2017 term decreased by 25.6 percent and made 5359 people, the number of migrants who left the country increased by 17.3 percent and made 12 874 people, the balance of migration was minus 7515 people.
The main migration exchange of the country is with the CIS countries, 77.3 percent, the share of those who left the CIS is 88.8 percent.
The share of interregional migrants made 31.5 percent of the country's total internal migrants. At the same time, the positive balance of interregional migration was observed in the cities of Almaty with 14,185 people and Astana with 4,898 people, and in the South Kazakhstan region the 1559 people and the Akmola region with 25 people.
