President Nursultan Nazarbayev received overwhelming approval from Kazakhstani poll respondents, an International Republican Institute (IRI) press release published May 19 said.
About 91% spoke favorably of him.
Baltic Surveys/The Gallup Organisation, on behalf of the US-based IRI, polled 1,527 adults nationwide April 3-13, with a 2.5% margin of error.
About 47% said democracy was the proper form of government for the country.
Nazarbayev has one month to sign or veto a parliamentary bill giving him "leader of the nation" status. Opposition members have complained that the bill is dangerous and supports a personality cult, Eurasianet.org reported.
