    Kazakhstan ratifies Agreement on International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea
     Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev has signed a law on ratification of the agreement between the governments of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan on the status of the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea (IFAS) and its organizations, the president’s press office said Monday.
    The agreement was signed on April 9, 1999 in Ashgabat.
     The document is aimed at enhancing the efficiency of the IFAS and helping the organization to obtain the status of an international organization, including all applicable immunities and privileges, the Committee for International Affairs, Defense and Security of the Majilis (the lower chamber of the Kazakh parliament) earlier said in a report
    “The ratification of the agreement will help improve and support the development of the social, economic and ecological situation in the Aral Sea region,” the report said.
