Over 2.5 Million People support Referendum to extend President Nazarbayev's Term to End 2020

    The group of activists promoting a referendum to extend President Nursultan Nazarbayev's term of office until the end of 2020 has now collected 2.59 million votes, said Yerlan Sydykov, rector of Semipalatinsk State University and head of the initiative group, Kazakhstan Today informs citing news agency KazTag.
    "As of yesterday, we collected 2.590 votes," he said.
    He declared despite the initiative group has exceeded its prognosis on the number of collected votes, it will continue working until January 10.
    As was reported previously, the initiative group for referendum organization was registered on December 27. According to the article 17, the final decision on the referendum organization is made by the president of the country. Earlier the representatives of the initiative group had said the referendum may take place in March, 2011.
    The next presidential election is planned for 2012, according to Kazakhstan Today.
