Constitutional Court opposes Referendum Law
31.01.2011
Kazakhstan’s constitutional court opposed a plan to extend Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev’s tenure to 2020, saying the law adopted by parliament does not correspond to the constitution and cannot be signed or enforced, AFP reported on Jan. 31, citing Constitutional Council Chief Justice Igor Rogov.
The court said the final decision on the matter rests with the president who has one month to express any objection to the ruling.
Rogov said Nazabayev’s doubts regarding the constitutionality of the law turned out to be well-grounded.
