Activists demand Justice for Kazakh killed in U.S.

    Kirill Denyakin had been working as a cook in Portsmouth, Virginia at the time of his killing.
    About 20 Kazakh youth activists picketed the U.S. Consulate in Almaty today demanding justice for a Kazakh citizen killed in a police shooting in the United States last month, RFE/RL's Kazakh Service reports.
    Dauren Babamuratov, the deputy chairman of the Bolashaq (Future) youth movement, told journalists that the activists have urged President Barack Obama to make "the policeman who killed [Kirill] Denyakin accountable for the murder."
    The group handed a letter addressed to Obama to a representative of the U.S. Consulate.
    Denyakin, 26, had been working as a cook in the Renaissance Hotel in Portsmouth, Virginia since 2009.
    In a statement last month about the April 23 incident, Portsmouth police said an officer responding to a call about a burglary saw a man banging on the door to an apartment. Police said the officer opened fire when the man lunged toward him, RFE/RL reports.
