Austria refuses to extradite Aliyev

A Vienna court has refused to extradite Kazakhstani President Nursultan Nazarbayev’s exiled former son-in-law to face murder charges in Kazakhstan, Lenta.ru reported June 17.
The court did not give the reason for its decision.
Four years ago, Vienna rejected another extradition request by Astana, saying that Rakhat Aliyev was not certain to receive a fair trial in Kazakhstan.
Aliyev is accused of kidnapping and murdering two Nurbank executives who disappeared in 2007. Authorities found their bodies buried outside Almaty in May.
Nazarbayev recently directed Kazakhstan’s security agencies’ chiefs to make every effort to obtain Aliyev’s extradition.
Aliyev has lived in Austria since 2007 and maintains his innocence, according to Central Asia Online.
