Almaty Aport Apples reviving

13.09.2011
September is harvest month. The Talgar district of the Almaty Oblast is now picking Aport apples, which were formally the city’s symbol.
In the Talgar District, the Selection Office of the Fruit-growing Research Institute is located. It was founded here in 1937, and is the only place in the country, where experts are engaged in fruit-growing research to revive Aport apples.
In 1865, a migrant named Yegor Redko brought this breed of apples to Kazakhstan.
Growing in the Ili Alatau Mountains, the Aport apples exceeded all expectations.
This was because the site is 800 to 2,000 meters above sea level, and is optimal for this breed of apple, since under these conditions.
The Aport apple’s disappearance was connected with the destruction of its ecological habitat, Caspionet states.
