Forest to be planted on Dried Aral Sea Floor
17.10.2011
The governments of Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan have developed a project for the forestation of the dried up Aral seabed, according to the UN website.
"The project was developed by the governments of Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan and is based on the governments’ measures to reverse environmental degradation and achieving ecological sustainability in the Aral Sea," the report says.
It is expected that "plantations on the tens of thousands of hectares of the drained bottom will make an important contribution to the fight against environmental degradation. They will help thousands of families to return to the region and will help revitalize the region's economy."
The project was unveiled at a joint meeting of the Committee on Foresty of Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the Forestry Commission of EEC, which took place in Antalya on October 10-14, KazTag reports.
