President vetoes Constitutional Council's Decision to postpone Zhanaozen Vote

10.01.2012
President Nursultan Nazarbayev has vetoed the Constitutional Council’s decision to postpone parliamentary voting in the town of Zhanaozen in the Mangystau Oblast, a presidential press statement reports.
On January 10, 2012, the president objected to an additional resolution from the council made on January 6, which implied it was ‘impossible’ to holding elections to the Majilis and Maslikhats in Zhanaozen under current socio-political conditions, Kazinform says.
The president while taking his decision said he was taking into account Zhanaozen residents’ anxiety and concern over the fact that the council’s decision had limited their voting rights provided under the national constitution, according to Gazeta.kz.
