An excavation of the ancient city of Almarasan near Almaty shows that the city of Almaty is over 1,000 years old, archeologists say.
The lower layer of the city dates back to the Wusun village of the 3rd century BC. It is possible the famous oriental researcher of the 19th century Vasily Bartold mentioned Almaty in his works.
Recently, archeologists have found coins dating back to the 13th century, with the inscription “Almaty,” Caspionet reports.
