Almaty to fine owners of 'dirty' cars

14.01.2013
Almaty will begin fining the owners of cars that produce high levels of emissions, Altai Rakhimbetov, chief of the City Administration for Natural Resources and the Regulation of Nature Management, said on January 11, according to KazTAG.
The owners of cars that emit excessive toxins – according to norms prescribed by the Kazakhstani administrative code – will have to pay a fine of two "monthly calculating units" (about US $23 or KZT 3,500), while those who repeat the offence within a year's time will have to pay five "monthly calculating units" (about US $58 or 8,800 KZT), he said. The date when the fines will go into effect was not reported.
Rakhimbetov expressed hope such fines would reduce air pollution, according to Central Asia Online.
