Kazakhstan's Budget Commission May 29 approved KZT 2 billion (US $13.3m) to buy back non-lethal (traumatic) weapons from the general public, kt.kz reported, citing the Interior Minister Kalmukhanbet Kasymov.
The money will be allocated for the country's 2014-2016 budgets, he said, adding that the project would save lives.
The bought-back weapons would be transferred to law enforcement organisations for their use, Kasymov said.
About 36,000 Kazakh citizens own more than 40,000 non-lethal weapons, according to the government, Central Asia Online said.
