8,462 road accidents have resulted in the deaths of 1,167 people and 10,837 injuries during the first six months of 2013, the Committee of the Traffic Police under the Ministry of Internal Affairs reported.
"Compared to the same period of last year, the number of road accidents raised by 49 percent, and the number of those killed and injured in these accidents rose by five and 59 percent, respectively," the committee's report released on Monday said.
According to the report, 78 percent, or 6,628 accidents took place in populated areas of the country. Every seventh accident happened on large highways. 642 happened on main local roads.
"A low level of discipline on part of drivers remains the cause for most traffic accidents. 21.6 percent of all road accidents happened due speeding (1,825), 9.3 percent were because of violations at pedestrian crossings (789) and some 8.3 percent – were because the driver entered the oncoming lane (705)," the report said.
249 accidents through the fault of drivers who were intoxicated led to the death of 50 people, and injured 385.
"There were also certain cases, specifically 256 accidents happened because of the fault of bus drivers. The greater part of these (76.5 percent) were due to the guilt of the drivers of regular buses (as opposed to Marshutkas, etc – KNL)," the report said.
Meanwhile, 770 road accidents occurred due to the fault of pedestrians, Trend wrote.
