Strange lake creature brought to South Kazakhstan rescuers

25.07.2013
An unusual creature resembling a Branchiopoda class tadpole shrimp has been found in a lake in South Kazakhstan, Tengrinews.kz reports, citing the Emergency Department of the region. The crustacean is 5 cm length long, it has a long bifurcated tail, thin carapace and numerous pairs of legs.
Local residents brought it to rescue workers after they caught it. Tadpole shrimps usually have solid carapace and around 70 pairs of legs. These animals live in still waters. No such creature is known to inhabit lakes in Kazakhstan however.
This is not the sole case when an out-of-place marine creature was caught in Kazakhstan. Fishermen in the Pavlodar Oblast once caught a piranha in the Irtysh River in 2012. It weighed 2 kilograms. The fish must have been released into the river from a private aquarium, Kazakhstan ichthyologists assumed, www.tengrinews.kz wrote.
