President ratifies agreement with Russia on joint air defense system

    President Nursultan Nazarbayev has ratified the agreement between Russia and Kazakhstan to set up a joint air defense system, a news release from the President reported on May 26.
    The agreement was signed in Astana on January 30, 2013.
    During peacetime, according to the agreement, the authorized bodies of the two parties together with the commander of the joint air defense system of Russia and Kazakhstan will decide on the use of armed forces and the organization of combat duty.
    In the event of an increasing military threat or war, the two parties reserve the right to decide on the use of the joint forces and facilities as per their national legislation.
    The joint air force will be led by a commander appointed by the presidents of Russia and Kazakhstan and advised by the defense ministers.
    A joint air defense command’s are in headquarters in Almaty.
    The agreement is valid for 5 years and can be extended for the next 5 years automatically, according to CA-News.
