Former Karaganda akim arrested

    The former akim of the city of Karaganda, Meiram Smagulov has been detained on suspicion of abuse of power and has been taken to a detention center, a Kazinform correspondent reports.
    Smagulov was appointed akim in October 2012. In June he voluntarily resigned.
    The investigators believe Smagulov, while working as akim, renovated his home using the Yutex Company, which was building housing under the Affordable Housing Program. Initial estimates on the repairs are above KZT 5 million, KazInform reports.
