Eurasian Economic Union comes into force
05.01.2015
The Eurasian Economic Union of Russia, Belarus, and Kazakhstan has come into force as of January 1, 2015.
Member state-signatories signed a treaty founding the Eurasian Economic Union in Astana on May 29, 2014.
The new integration will replace the Customs Union and the Eurasian Economic Community.
The idea was first suggested by President Nursultan Nazarbayev in 1994, in a speech at Moscow State University.
Armenia inked the treaty to join the EEC on October 10, 2014 and Kyrgyzstan on December 23, 2014.
Armenia became full-fledged member of the Eurasian Economic Union on January 2, as the treaty on its accession was ratified by all member states.
Although Kyrgyzstan's accession treaty will not come into force until May 2015, provided it has been ratified, it will participate in the EEU from the day of its establishment as an acceding state, according to Akipress.
