Kazakhstan ratifies confidence-building measures agreement with Kyrgyzstan on border area

    Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev has ratified today a confidence-building measures agreement between Kazakhstan and the Kyrgyz Republic on mutual border areas.
    The agreement was made in Astana on December 15, 2001.
    The purpose of the agreement is to create a legal framework to strengthen mutual trust on the shared state border area and the development of cross-border cooperation.
    As per the agreement, the two parties will coordinate the scale, geographical limits, timing and the number of military and special exercises.
    They also pledge to notify each other on large-scale military activities and the movement of troops caused by emergencies, to cooperate for the prevention of various types of hazards on the state border, exchange information on adverse conditions emerging on state border areas, establish close friendly contacts between the military border agencies, employees of special services, customs and law enforcement agencies on the state borders.
    In the event of incidents on the shared state border, the two parties agree to undertake steps to resolve the situation and limit damages, according to Akipress.
