Nuclear physicist Fidel Castro Diaz-Balart visits Kazakhstan

    Fidel Castro Diaz-Balart, scientific adviser to the Cuban president and a nuclear physicist, is in Kazakhstan for a private visit after receiving an invitation from the government, EFE has learned.
    The son of Cuban revolutionary leader Fidel Castro has visited many scientific and technical facilities dedicated to the development of environmental and biotechnology projects.
    The Cuban nuclear physicist is on a seven-day visit to the Eurasian country to learn about Kazakh potential in this area to open the way for scientific and trade relations between the nations.
    During his first day en Astana, Castro Diaz-Balart met with Energy Minister Vladimir Shkolnik and Foreign Minister Erlan Idrissov.
    The Cuban scientist also visited Eurasian University and Nazarbayev University, and he had lunch at La Isla de la Libertad, a Cuban restaurant in the heart of the city.
    The son of former Cuban President Fidel Castro seemed surprised when he saw a Cuban flag and photos of his father and uncle on the establishment's walls.
    Castro Diaz-Balart said the Kazakh and Cuban peoples "are lovers of history and tradition."
    During his visit to Astana, Castro Diaz-Balart was accompanied by Canadian Ambassador to Kazakhstan Shawn Steil, who also represents Cuba, the Dominican Republic and Jamaica in the Eurasian country.
    Fidel Angel Castro Diaz-Balart graduated from Lomonosov Moscow State University and is affiliated with the Kurchatov Institute, a prestigious Russian atomic energy research institution.
    Fidel Castro's eldest son also holds a master's degree in physics and a doctorate in physical sciences and mathematics.
    During the 1980s, he worked on research and development of nuclear energy, and founded the Advanced Nuclear Science and Technology Institute in Havana, according to EFE
