Kazakhstan creates Defense and Aerospace Industry Ministry

    Nursultan Nazarbayev has decreed the creation of a Ministry of Defense and Aerospace Industry. The president signed the decree on October 6, a news statement from Ak Orda.
    The ministry’s main efforts include state policy in the defense, aerospace and electronics industries as well as cyber-security, the military draft, the formation and development of a state material reserve, a single military-technical policy and military-technical cooperation and legal responsibility for the formation and execution of defense contracts.
    The new ministry will take over the following areas of responsibilty:
    - defense industry functions from the Ministry of Defense;
    - space industry functions from the Ministry of Investments and Development;
    - preparation and organization of the mobilization, formation and development of the state material reserve from the Ministry of National Economy;
    - information security functions from the Office of the Prime Minister;
    - information security functions from the Ministry of Information and Communications.
    The ministry must also establish three committees:
    - Committee for Information Security,
    - Aerospace Committee
    - Committee for State Material Reserves.

    Beibut Atamkulov has been appointed minister of defense and the aerospace industry according to a presidential decree signed on October 7.
