The state policy of Kazakhstan in the field of waste management is defined in the Concept on the transition to a green economy. This policy is aimed at the introduction of separate waste collection, the development of the waste recycling sector with the production of recycled materials with the attraction of investments, including through public-private partnership.

The message of the Ministry of Ecology, Geology and Natural Resources stated that the taken measures have already helped to increase the share of processing to 11.51% in 2018, against 9% in 2017, and 2.6% in 2016. To date, out of 204 cities and districts in the republic, separate collection at different stages is introduced in 51, and sorting in 30 localities.

For the further development of the industry, it is necessary to create a favourable investment climate, government support measures, the allocation of funds from state and local budgets, as well as attracting private investment. For a comprehensive solution of problems and the formation of a unified vision, the Ministry of Ecology, Geology and Natural Resources, together with interested government agencies and organisations, is developing a program in the field of solid waste management.

On July 8, the Minister of Ecology, Geology and Natural Resources of Kazakhstan Magzum Mirzagaliyev and the Mayor of the capital Altai Kulginov got acquainted with the work of the complex for processing solid waste. This plant is the only enterprise in the city that performs manual sorting of MSW with the extraction of secondary raw materials, production facilities allow processing of sorted plastic. The complex receives up to 950 tonnes of MSW daily from 65 garbage collection companies in the capital.

“The problem of recycling today is acute in the whole country. In the capital, only 14% of waste is sorted, in other regions the figure is even lower. Our goal is to bring the level of solid waste processing in Kazakhstan to 40% by 2040,” Magzum Mirzagaliyev said.
