
President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has had a telephone conversation with his Kyrgyz counterpart Sooronbay Jeenbekov on August 8.
The heads of state discussed the topical issues of the bilateral cooperation and further steps on enhancing the Kazakh-Kyrgyz interaction in light of the oncoming visit of Kazakhstan President to Bishkek in autumn 2019. Kassym-Jomart Tokayev wished peace and prosperity to the fraternal Kyrgyz nation.
Kyrgyzstan’s ex-president Almazbek Atambayev has given himself up to the authorities, the entourage of the former head of state told TASS on August 8.
«Atambayev has been taken away from the territory of his residence by police personnel,» a spokesman for Atambayev’s entourage said, adding that several of his close associates, including former chief of the presidential staff Farid Niyazov were removed from Atambayev’s residence in the village of Koi-Tash, too. The special operation to detain Atambayev lasted for nearly 24 hours, according to Kazinform.
Former President of Kyrgyzstan Almazbek Atambayev was placed in the remand prison of the National Security Committee until August 26, his attorney Sergei Slesarev said.
His interrogation ended by 1 am August 9 after the Interior Ministry forcibly brought him to the GKNB from his home in Koi-Tash, where Atambayev's supporters and police clashed for 2 days.
Atambayev is a suspect in Aziz Batukayev's case.
Clashes between the SWAT soldiers and supporters of Atambayev occurred in his home in Koi-Tash village on August 7 evening. The National Security Committee special forces soldiers tried and failed to arrest Atambayev by storming his house. At least 50 people were injured, one SWAT soldier died.
Parliament of Kyrgyzstan stripped Atambayev of his immunity from prosecution on June 27. Atambayev is accused of illegal freeing of crime boss Aziz Batukayev from prison, concealment of income, corruption, power abuse. Atambayev slammed the parliament and denied all accusations. He said earlier that he will resist his arrest attempts and dismissed several police summons.
