President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev took part in the CSTO Collective Security Council session, held in videoconference format. The leaders of the CSTO states exchanged views on international and regional security, tallied up implementation of the priority areas of the CSTO activities in the outgoing year, and outlined plans for the upcoming period.
Speaking at the Summit about the current situation in the regional and global security, Tokayev praised the Russian President Vladimir Putin’s mediation in ending hostilities in Nagorno-Karabakh. He opined that "COVID-19 pandemic has caused a massive upheaval in world politics and the economy. The situation is also complicated by the growth of mutual sanctions and restrictions, escalating trade wars. The growth of new global challenges and threats associated with extremism and terrorism, drug trafficking, cybersecurity, illegal migration causes concern," he said.According to the Kazakh President, in these conditions, the role of the CSTO as an effective tool of interstate interaction for strengthening peace, ensuring security and stability in the vast region is significantly increasing.
He informed his CSTO colleagues about the upcoming parliamentary elections in the country, as well as the implementation of a package of unprecedented democratic reforms. The Summit adopted the Declaration of the Collective Security Council and a political statement on the formation of a just and sustainable world order.
The documents adopted at the session are aimed at further strengthening of the current directions of the CSTO's activities, expanding cooperation with other countries and international structures.
The chairmanship in the Organization went from Russia to Tajikistan. The next session of the CSTO CSC will be held in this country in 2021. The CSTO Collective Security Council session approved and adopted 15 documents.
